The aim of the project is to nvestigate genetic relationships between Icelandic Angelica populations in relation to other Nordic Angelica populations including the Norwegian Angelica variety with solid stalks referred to as Voss-Angelica and to elucidate genetic variation between and within Icelandic Angelica populations. We will collect historical information on the cultivation of Angelica in Iceland in order to identify relevant collection sites as well as gathering general historical and scientific knowledge of Angelica. Samples will be collected for DNA analyses  and relevant morphological data will be gathered together with GPS coordinates at the sampling sites. Molecular analysis will be carried out  in the laboratory facilities of NordGen in Sweden, using the same methodology as will be used in their molecular study of Greenlandic and Faroese material. Results from this study will give necessary knowledge about the genetic background of Icelandic and Nordic Angelica, in order to start screening relevant material for chemical content and taste, with the ultimate goal to contribute to the New Nordic Cuisine.
